Rowell Ucat, more popularly known as social media star Medyo Maldito, has something new for his fans and followers. Today, March 07, his first full-length film will be shown at the SM CDO Downtown Premier cinema. The movie also stars sweet and sexy Akiko Solon and features Snake Princess in a special role.
Written by Jude Gitamondoc and Therese Villarante,”Magbuwag Ta Kay” is a romantic comedy that anybody can relate to. It tells the story of Roy and Kay, a couple who discovers the many unexpected realizations they have to go through after deciding to break up.
While the movie is Medyo Maldito and Snake Princess’ first movie, it is not Akiko’s first time to appear in front of a camera. Her initial exposure was when she captured the Filipino audience in ABS-CBN’s Star Power in 2010. This was then followed by several TV appearances as in shows like Maalala Mo Kaya, Princess and I (2012), Pasion de Amor (2015), and Bridges of Love (2015). “Magbuwag Ta Kay” is her first movie appearance as the female lead.
Producer Heritage Productions made sure that everything that defines “Magbuwag Ta Kay” is world-class. Thus, original and contemporary Visayan Pop and Visayan Rock songs lend more color and drama (and fun) to the movie.
Filmed entirely in Cebu, the movie also highlights some of the most scenic destinations in the city and its neighboring communities. Likewise, it is a gathering of some of the Queen City of the South’s most talented artists, including veteran broadcaster Dante Luzon and actress/activist Ligaya Rabago.
Executive Producer Sunshine Lim – an entrepreneur, thespian, educator, cultural activist, and patron of Cebuano arts and culture; shared during the press conference held at Boy Zugba Corrales that despite knowing how challenging it was to produce a full-length film, she and her group were decided on completing the project. Their goal is to bring back life into the Visayan filmmaking industry. She also encouraged local filmmakers in Visayas and Mindanao (including the aspiring ones) to pursue their goals – and to help uplift the film industry outside of Metro Manila.
Along with her husband Charles Lim, Sunshine has produced several short films, particularly the anti-bullying movie Lunch Box (Sinulog Short Film 2015). They also co-produced Lily, a 2016 Cinema One Original film starring Shaina Magdayao. It won the Best Director award in the said film festival (for director Keith Deligero).
“Magbuwag Ta Kay” is the directorial debut of Cebuano Reuben Joseph Aquino, an alumnus of the International Academy of Film & TV who is now based in Manila. He has worked with DreamLine Productions, where he handled post-production for a number of Cebuano movies including My Paranormal Romance (by Victor Villanueva), for which he won the 2011 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Fest Best Editing award.
The film was shot using the Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4K Digitial Cinema camera, the first Cebuano full-length movie to hold such distinction.
The movie is in Binisaya but has English subtitles. So anyone will enjoy watching this romantic comedy!
