Tomorrow, March 25, everyone will be turning off their lights and electronic devices in honor of Earth Hour 2017. The Earth Hour Movement started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with the intention of spreading awareness about and educating people about the importance of promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment. It is a global event that attracts participants from practically all over the world.
Habagat Outdoor Equipment, one of the country’s leading outdoor products manufacturer, has been actively participating in the Earth Hour activities as part of its commitment to the goal of being a “Corporation with a Conscience”. In 2009, Habagat organized the first Earth Hour Night Ride here in Cagayan de Oro City. That event attracted thousands of bikers and supporters for the campaign on climate change awareness. It eventually became an event that Kagay-anons look forward to every year. More or less 2,000 bikers gather every year to get on their bikes and ride on the streets of CDO as a way of support for the goal of reducing carbon footprint, among many other climate change concerns.
Earth Hour and Night Ride 2017
Tomorrow, Habagat will once again gather bikers from all walks of life for the annual Earth Hour Night Ride. This year’s ride is set to take place in 13 locations: Bukidnon, Cebu, Davao, Dumaguete, Gingoog, Jaro in Iloilo, Leyte, Manila, Ormoc, Ozamis, Palompon, Zamboanga, and of course, Cagayan de Oro. The event will unfold simultaneously in the above-mentioned places.
The 2017 Earth Hour Night Ride will take place at Ayala Centrio Mall at 8pm. Assembly area is at the mall’s Capt. Vicente Roa entrance. For those who do not have bikes or are not too keen about biking, a Night Walk in the streets of CDO will happen at the same time with the ride. In addition, you can also cruise the CDO streets on your longboard or skateboard.
While waiting for the designated “lights off” hour, there will be live entertainment at the venue, featuring musical performances by local artists like Dhassig Band, Dodu Abrio & The Viajeros, and Kagay Band, among others.
Registration for the event is FREE and will start at 6pm at the venue. Those who want an Earth Hour Night Ride 2017 jersey can buy one for Php550. Riders are required to wear helmet and bring their blinkers. Habagat will strictly implement the No Blinkers, No Helmet, No Ride rule. Also, all participants are encouraged to bring their own empty water bottles as Nature’s Spring will provide free water for everyone. The first 1000 to register will be receiving free hotdogs from Virginia.
