On March 25, Cagayan de Oro and the rest of the world will be observing Earth Hour. From 8:30pm to 9:30pm, households, establishments, and landmarks will be turning off their lights to symbolize their support and commitment to keeping the Earth environmentally safe. Seda Centrio will take part in this global environmental awareness campaign.

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour was first organized on March 31, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The idea came about after WWF Australia and representatives from the advertising agency Leo Burnett Sydney met to think of ways to raise awareness on climate change and encourage Australians to take part in the campaign. The event was originally known as The Big Flick, referring to the switch off.

San Francisco then organized their own switching off event in October 2007. In March 2008, the first international Earth Hour took place, with all seven continents participating. The event drew in a total of 26 cities and around 300 small towns.

Aside from raising awareness on climate change, Earth Hour has also resulted to a decrease in electricity usage in some places. In Christchurch, New Zealand for example, there was a 13% drop in electricity demand after the 2008 Earth Hour. A significant drop in energy consumption was also reported for the Philippines (particularly in Luzon), Thailand, Canada, and Dubai.

The Philippines is dubbed “Earth Hour Hero Country” because Filipinos were number one in global participation from 2009 to 2012.
